Study Grant Scheme
The ICSSR-NWRC offers a Study Grant Scheme to support Ph.D. scholars in the field of Social Sciences. This scheme provides financial assistance for visiting libraries and collecting research material.

Eligibility & Benefits
- Who Can Apply?
- Ph.D. scholars in Social Sciences not receiving financial aid from ICSSR, UGC, universities, or other agencies.
Financial Assistance Provided:
- Travel Reimbursement: Second-class railway sleeper/bus fare or a combination of both from the scholar's place of residence/university to the library location and back.
- Boarding & Lodging Allowance: ₹400/- per day (fixed) for a maximum of 30 days per financial year.
- Miscellaneous Expenses: ₹1000/- for local conveyance and other research-related costs.
Application Process
- Submit an Application to the Director, ICSSR-NWRC with the required details.
- Regional Applicability:
- The ICSSR North-Western Regional Centre (Chandigarh) covers Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Chandigarh.
- Scholars from other regions must apply to their respective ICSSR Regional Centre.

Study Grant Scheme for Ph.D. Scholars:
This scheme provides financial support to Ph.D. scholars in social sciences who are not receiving assistance from any other source.
- A) Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be registered for Ph.D. in a recognized Indian university within the NWRC jurisdiction.
- Must not be receiving any financial assistance from ICSSR, UGC, or other agencies.
- Not applicable to those revising an already awarded doctoral thesis.
- Applications must be submitted to the Director of the Regional Centre where the scholar is registered.
Regional Centres administering the scheme:
Chandigarh, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Shillong, and the National Social Science Documentation Centre (ICSSR, New Delhi for the Northern Region).
- B) Entitlements:
- Daily Allowance: ₹500 per day for boarding and lodging (max. 30–45 days per financial year).
- Miscellaneous Expenses: ₹2,000 to cover conveyance and other minor costs.
- Travel Support: Second-class sleeper train/bus fare from the university/home to research locations (up to three cities via the shortest route).
- C) Application & Disbursement Process:
- Application: Submit the prescribed form along with a recommendation from the Head of the Department/Institution.
- Timing: Applications are accepted year-round. Scholars should apply well in advance of their intended travel dates.
- Accommodation: Can be arranged in the ICSSR NWRC Guest House (subject to availability and advance notice).
Conditions for Payment:
- Travel Receipts: Actual travel tickets/receipts must be submitted for reimbursement.
- Daily Allowance: Payable upon submission of a certificate confirming expenditure and a progress report.
- Attendance: Certificate from the visited library/institution is required.
- Utilization Period: The grant is valid within the financial year (up to March 31).
